Furnace Troubleshooting: What to Do Before Calling for Furnace Repair

October 07, 2015

You can’t count on the weather in the Rio Grande Valley, but one thing the team at Cytech Heating & Cooling L.C. wants you to be able to count on is your heating and cooling system. Having a cozy home isn’t a seasonal thing, it’s something you require all year. When your furnace is having trouble you may think that means a furnace repair can be looming on the horizon. That may not be the case. If your furnace hasn’t been its usual, stable self recently, there are some things a homeowner can do before calling in the experts at Cytech Heating & Cooling L.C..

Check the Thermostat

We have been on a job where all we had to do was switch a thermostat from “cool” to “heat”. While setting the thermostat for the season, it’s easy for a homeowner to forget to flip the switch, telling your heating and cooling system what you would like it to do.

Another thing to check while you’re at the thermostat is the battery. The majority of digital thermostats give a low battery warning, but if some time has passed since you’ve changed batteries it may be time for a switch. It’s another easy fix that could save you a repair call.

Check the Filter

A dirty air filter can create all sorts of troubles. Not only will a dirty filter hinder your system’s efficiency and stifle air flow, it could also cause a sudden breakdown. Changing the filter in your heating and cooling system is easy and it can play a big role in keeping your system operating at its best.

Check the Switches

The first switch you’ll want to check is the breaker for your furnace. It’s often the case that a problem can be as simple as a tripped breaker or blown fuse.

Check the Vents

A common misconception is that a homeowner should seal the vents in unused rooms. This could actually lead to a furnace repair in the future. Closed vents generate higher pressure within your duct system and cause your system to work harder than it needs to.
